You don't need any particular app, just the QR code from the EU covid cert. It can be on a phone, printed, tattooed on your forehead, whatever takes your fancy. They scan it a lot more frequently than they ever did in Ireland.
Bring that, a photo ID and an FFP2 mask with you everywhere and you'll be grand.

Sorry probably I didn't make myself clear there.
Of course you don't need any app at all but if you download the one they use in shops/restaurants etc. in Italy you can check beforehand if your QR code is accepted in that specific setting. In Italy we are masters at making things confused so we have different types of covid QR codes.
Once you launch the app there are 4 options to choose from to check your own QR code, and to eat in a restaurant you'd need to get a valid result when you scan it after choosing the "Rafforzata" option. To enter the country they would scan through a different option, which is "Ingresso IT". That's why you may have a valid QR code for flying in but an invalid one to eat in a restaurant.
Eventually, I suggest ye to give it a go on this test app, just to be on the safe side.
